Chandni Chowk

Chandni Chowk Description :
One of the main markets of Delhi, Chandni Chowk was once lined with beautiful fountains. It was the eyes and the ears of the Mughal's commercial instincts and is today one of the country's best known wholesale markets for textiles, electronic goods and watches. The entire arc was designed by Jahanara Begum, Shah Jahan's favourite daughter and was the inhabited by the well to do famlies of the time.

But today the place is very crowded and congested. Chandni Chowk is located opposite the Red Fort. The Area has got the Digamber Jain Temple which houses the Birds hospital. On one end of Chandni Chowk is the Fatehpuri Mosque which was erected by the wives of Shah Jahan. Opposite the old police station or the Kotwali is the Sunheri Masjid from where Nadir Shah ordered his troops to plunder and massacre Delhi.

The most prominent bylanes for shopping in this area are:

Katra Neel :- Katra is the cloth bazaar, comprising of silks, satin, crepe, cotton, muslin and any other fabric that one can think of.

Bhagirath Palace :- Asia's largest market for electrical goods, it is also known for medical equipment and allopathic medicines. To local people it is known as 'Chooriwali ki Haveli' or the Bangle Seller's Palace.

Kinari Bazaar :- This place is famous for traditional embroidery of zari and zardozi work. This street has everything an Indian bride could need for her trousseau.

Dariba Kalan :- There were rows of jewellers specializing in gold and silver ornaments situated in this lane.

Chhatta Chowk Bazaar : The Chhatta Chowk has around forty shops selling artificial and semi-precious jewellery, embroidered bags, hand painted wall hangings and fake 'antiques'.
